About this plugin

Lloyd Gallery puts your photos online in galleries that people can browse.

Create a gallery, add your photos and publish it. Lloyd Gallery turns phone photos the right way up and makes resized copies for different screen sizes, then shows them in full-width rows with a full-screen lightbox. When you activate the plugin it creates a page listing all your galleries, ready to add to your menu.

It suits anyone who keeps a website up to date: clubs, schools, charities, venues, event organisers, small businesses, and the agencies who build their sites.

Adding photos

  • Photos, folders or zip files. Drag in individual photos, a whole folder or a zip file, with a progress bar for each upload.
  • The right way up. Phone photos that would otherwise appear sideways are rotated.
  • Resized for the web. Each photo is resized for different screen sizes, and saved as WebP when your server supports it, so phones download small images and large screens get sharp ones.
  • iPhone photos. HEIC photos are converted when your server supports it. If it doesn’t, Lloyd Gallery says so instead of adding photos that won’t display.
  • Clear error messages. If a file is too big or can’t be used, you’re told why, with the affected files listed. Uploads that can be tried again get a Retry button.
  • Photos you already have. Pick photos from your Media Library instead of uploading them again. The same photo can be in as many galleries as you like.

Galleries

  • A galleries page. Activating the plugin creates a “Photo Gallery” page that lists every published gallery with its cover photo and date.
  • A page for every gallery, at an address such as yoursite.com/gallery/summer-fair/.
  • Dates. Give each gallery a date, usually the day the photos were taken. It’s shown with the gallery, and galleries can be sorted by date or by name.
  • Drafts and previews. New galleries start as drafts, so you can add photos and preview them before publishing.
  • Cover photos. The first photo becomes the cover. Click the star on any other photo to change it.
  • Descriptions, shown above the photos.

What visitors see

  • A justified photo grid. Photos are laid out in full-width rows, as on Flickr. Nothing is cropped, and portrait and landscape photos sit side by side.
  • A full-screen lightbox. Click a photo to see it full screen. Swipe and pinch to zoom on phones, or use the arrow keys on a computer.
  • A slideshow in the lightbox, at three speeds.
  • Captions, under photos and in the lightbox.
  • Fade-in as photos scroll into view.
  • Any screen size, from phones to large monitors.

Managing galleries

  • One screen for all your galleries, with Published and Draft tabs, and publish, move to draft and delete for several galleries at once.
  • Saves as you go. A new name, caption or date is saved when you click away, with a small confirmation.
  • Drag photos into order within a gallery.
  • Rotate, caption or remove a photo from the gallery screen.
  • Select several photos at once, including a range with Shift, and remove them together.
  • Removing is safe. Removing a photo from a gallery, or deleting a gallery, never deletes the photos from your Media Library. Anything permanent asks you to confirm first.
  • Settings if you need them. Image quality and sizes can be changed under Lloyd Gallery Settings. The defaults suit most sites.

Works with your website

  • Add galleries anywhere with the Lloyd Gallery block: one gallery, or the list of galleries, on any page or post. Shortcodes are available too.
  • Gallery Grid pattern. For a different look for your list of galleries, insert the “Lloyd Gallery: Gallery Grid” pattern and rearrange it with ordinary WordPress blocks.
  • Block themes and classic themes.
  • Menus. Add the galleries page, or individual galleries, to your site’s menu like any other page.
  • Search engines. Galleries are ordinary WordPress content, so SEO plugins such as Yoast SEO and Rank Math include them. Each gallery page also describes its photos to search engines.
  • Lightweight. No jQuery, and styles and scripts only load on pages that show a gallery.
  • Any language. Every word can be translated, including into right-to-left languages such as Arabic and Hebrew.
  • Multilingual sites. With Polylang, translate your galleries into every language on your site. Visitors see each gallery, the galleries page and the captions in their own language.

Your photos stay yours

  • Everything runs on your own website. Lloyd Gallery doesn’t connect to any outside service, doesn’t track your visitors and doesn’t load anything from other servers.
  • Location data stays private. Phones store where a photo was taken inside the file. Visitors only ever see resized copies, which leave that out.
  • If you delete the plugin, your galleries and photos are kept.

Lloyd Gallery Pro

The separate Lloyd Gallery Pro add-on adds:

  • Your own gallery order. Drag galleries into the order you want on your galleries page, instead of sorting them by name or date.
  • Password-protected galleries. Only people with the password can see a gallery, for private events, members or clients.
  • Importing from Modula. Bring your Modula galleries into Lloyd Gallery.
  • Every future Pro feature, included.

Supporting the plugin

To help other people find Lloyd Gallery, you can turn on a small “Photo gallery by Lloyd Gallery” link under your galleries in Lloyd Gallery Settings. It’s off unless you switch it on.
