Document Viewer – let visitors view files right in the browser

v2.4.2 · by bPlugins

Embed Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files in WordPress using Microsoft Office Viewer or Google Docs Viewer. One shortcode, no file conversion.

About this plugin

Embed Word, Excel and PowerPoint files that look exactly like the original.

Document Viewer lets you embed a Word document, Excel spreadsheet, PowerPoint presentation or PDF file on any WordPress page or post. Your visitors read it right in the browser. They do not download anything, they do not need Microsoft Office, and you do not convert anything.

The difference is who renders the file. Many embed plugins push your .docx or .xlsx through a third-party converter, and complex layouts come out broken: tables collapse, fonts change, slides lose their layout. Document Viewer uses Microsoft’s own Office Web Viewer, the same engine behind Office Online. A .docx looks like a .docx. An .xlsx keeps its columns. A .pptx keeps its slides.

Two viewer engines, both free

  • Microsoft Office Web Viewer: the best choice for Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Formatting, tables, charts and slide layouts stay intact because Microsoft renders them.
  • Google Docs Viewer: a good fallback, and it handles PDF well.

Switch between them with a dropdown. No account and no API key needed for either.

Supported file types

  • Word: .doc, .docx
  • Excel: .xls, .xlsx
  • PowerPoint: .ppt, .pptx
  • PDF: .pdf

Add files from your Media Library or paste a direct URL.

Why people choose Document Viewer

  • A spreadsheet that still looks like a spreadsheet. Google’s viewer often flattens Excel formatting. Microsoft’s does not.
  • No conversion step. You do not turn a .docx into a PDF or an HTML table first. Upload the file you already have.
  • Nothing for visitors to install. The document opens in the browser, on a phone as easily as on a desktop.
  • Works with any builder. The Gutenberg block for the Block Editor, the [office_doc] shortcode for everything else.
  • Small and focused. One shortcode, one block, a handful of settings. If you need a document library, a flipbook and sixteen file formats, see Document Embedder below.

Who uses it, and for what

  • Schools, teachers and training sites: handouts, worksheets and slide decks students read in the browser.
  • Theatre, events and clubs: schedules, scripts and rotas shared with cast, crew and members.
  • Accountants and consultants: rate cards and spreadsheets a client can read without downloading.
  • Councils, churches and associations: minutes, forms and policies published as the Word files they already keep.
  • Businesses and internal pages: a price list, menu or process document on a public or members-only page.

Add a document in under a minute

With the Gutenberg block

  1. Open any post or page in the Block Editor.
  2. Add the Document Viewer block.
  3. Upload a file or paste a URL, choose the viewer, set the size.

Block settings are grouped into four clear panels: Document Source, Viewer Engine, Display Dimensions and Security Restrictions. No hunting through one long sidebar.

With the shortcode

Use [office_doc] anywhere shortcodes run, including the Classic Editor, widgets, Elementor, Divi, Bricks, WPBakery, Beaver Builder and Oxygen. Generate the shortcode from the document’s edit screen and paste it in.

Free features

  • Two viewer engines: Microsoft Office Web Viewer and Google Docs Viewer.
  • Gutenberg block with grouped settings panels.
  • [office_doc] shortcode for the Classic Editor and page builders.
  • Custom width and height so the viewer fits your layout.
  • Dedicated document screen for managing the files you embed.

Document Viewer Pro

Need more control over how your files are shared? Pro adds:

  • Filename display: show or hide the document title above the viewer.
  • Pop-out control: stop visitors opening the document in a separate window.
  • Content protection: disable right-click, text selection and the Ctrl/Cmd + C, A, S, P shortcuts.
